Tungsten Filled 1 kilo Gold Bar Discovered in UK

In the biggest news we've broke since the JP Morgan whistle-blower stepped forward,
Australian Bullion Dealer ABC Bullion has contacted SD to advise that one of its suppliers has provided them photographic evidence of a tungsten filled 1 kilo gold bar discovered this week.  The bar passed a hand-held xrf scan which showed 99.98% pure AU.  The tungsten was only discovered when the bar was physically cut in half.
After numerous reports of 400oz tungsten filled bars being discovered in Hong Kong, this is the first documented and verified report with photographic evidence that has been made public.

Submitted by Australian Bullion Dealer ABC Bullion:

Attached are photographs of a legitimate Metalor 1000gm Au bar that has been drilled out and filled with Tungsten (W).
This bar was purchased by staff of a scrap dealer in xxxxx, UK yesterday. The bar appeared to be perfect other than the fact that it was 2gms underweight. It was checked by hand-held xrf and showed 99.98% Au. Being Tungsten, it would not be ferro-magnetic. The bar was supplied with the original certificate.
The owner of the business that purchased the bar only became suspicious when he realized the weight discrepancy and had the bar cropped. He estimates between 30-40% of the weight of the bar to be Tungsten.

The two halves of the cut bar

Now that we have confirmed documentation that 1 kilo gold bars have been drilled out and filled with tungsten, look for a rapid scramble to verify the AU contents of 400oz bars which reportedly have also been tainted with tungsten (the market is 'stuffed full' of gold plated tungsten 400oz bars according to Rob Kirby).

For those unfamiliar with the original reports that 60 metric tonnes of 400oz 'good delivery' bars were gutted and filled with tungsten, and swapped with US Treasury gold at Fort Knox in a highly sophisticated plan, an excerpt of his 2009 piece is included below:

The amount of “salted tungsten” gold bars in question was allegedly between 5,600 and 5,700 – 400 oz – good delivery bars [roughly 60 metric tonnes].
This was apparently all highly orchestrated by an extremely well financed criminal operation.
Within mere hours of this scam being identified – Chinese officials had many of the perpetrators in custody.
And here’s what the Chinese allegedly uncovered:
Roughly 15 years ago – during the Clinton Administration [think Robert Rubin, Sir Alan Greenspan and Lawrence Summers] – between 1.3 and 1.5 million 400 oz tungsten blanks were allegedly manufactured by a very high-end, sophisticated refiner in the USA [more than 16 Thousand metric tonnes].  Subsequently, 640,000 of these tungsten blanks received their gold plating and WERE shipped to Ft. Knox and remain there to this day.  I know folks who have copies of the original shipping docs with dates and exact weights of “tungsten” bars shipped to Ft. Knox.

The balance of this 1.3 million – 1.5 million 400 oz tungsten cache was also plated and then allegedly “sold” into the international market.
Apparently, the global market is literally “stuffed full of 400 oz salted bars”.
Makes one wonder if the Indians were smart enough to assay their 200 tonne haul from the IMF?

  4. Yep - that would certainly seem to be confirmation of what we've been hearing for years. I'l bet the Chinese are pissed - this, if I recall, began as an operation to screw them over. Trying to remember where I read this. Could be Christopher Story's research (which he paid for with his life) - his work is well worth reading - see index of articles here http://worldreports.org/news

  8. So what is real and what is fake?

    Bars?

    Ingots?

    Coins?

How deep does this go and who did it?

Was it done at the mint or after it left?

  9. Seriously, how low down the weight scale does this go?

  10. XRF is only a surface analysis. It probably penetrates about the thickness of a piece of paper.

I use this type of equipment and it will not detect tungsten or anything else which has been covered by gold unless the coating is really thin.

    ReplyDelete
  11. Which means there is a lot less gold than is reported. Will this be the catalyst that propels gold prices to the moon?

And what about silver? Are there fakes too?

    ReplyDelete
  12. Doesn't suprise me. I had heard of this, but never seen one, even in photo. gold bars with tungsten core.
Supposedly China received a shipment of bars or ingots, at some point. I believe years back, they had them inspected and drilled, and found a reasonable % of them ( i dont believe all, but maybe 50 % +/-) to have tungsten as a core. This story was a rumour, but it probably was factual.
They weren't amused,..... which is understandable.
I can't remember the origin of where the ingots came from. I think some or part of the shipment came from the USA. I don't know if they had problems aquiring the gold, and china was becoming impatient. And thus it was decided, that to meet delivery, a % would be part fabricated.
I dont know if this coincided, around the time that GB sold their gold, or a large portion of it. And at the time, it was quoted, by i believe Gordon Brown, that they (the british) were getting good value for money, in GBP for their gold.

This may or may not be directly linked to the chinese shipment. I expect this story,(article) could be the tip of the iceberg. Who knows how many bars/ingots or coins are not pure, (which should be pure) and are only part gold (composite).

  13. Counterfeiting has been going since Fred Flintstone adulterated his brontoburgers with pink slime.
Get used to this. When silver is called for, and shortages become more and more common, as is evident even today, criminal governments like the USSA, criminal banks like----we know their names---and just plain old criminals, will be faking silver, adulterating it and selling it to the unsuspecting who will be buying in a feeding frenzy soon enough.
I don't know about most silver buyers but at this time I expect that 1 oz rounds and AE coins are the best route to assure purity. Having a good electronic scale will help assess if the weight is right on new purchases.
But I also expect to see counterfeited rounds coming through the system soon as well. Caveat Emptor.
It makes the priority of stacking now, while prices are reasonable, all that more important.
When silver hits $60-100 an oz, the temptation to counterfeit on a broad scale will be irresistible. IMO

  14. it looks like FOFOA's claims of this being a wacky conspiracy theory (usually a pretty lame counter-argument, and one often used by TPTB to discredit unsanctioned viewpoints) are wrong. Although I understand his need to be skeptical in light of very circumstantial evidence, this seems to be a bit more solid (no pun intended).

I'd still like to see more pics of this, especially of where the tungsten was hollowed out from the ends.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Anyone know the feasibility and costs involved in doing this on a smaller scale? Say one ounce coins.

For bars, especially LGD bars, I can imagine this to be feasible.

On coins, I'm not so sure.

  16. When I first started buying, I did some research to find out the extent of fake bullion silver.
This is one link I still have - http://about.ag/.

  18. SO....if they are drilling them out after they are poured they must be saving the drill shavings and pouring liquid/molten tungsten into the void or pressing tungsten bars /rods in to the void. And then pouring a bit of molten gold in the end to cover the tungsten core This would make it the tampering more noticeable on the ends/edges. Now, this would be much harder and less lucrative to attempt on the smaller bars, say 10oz and smaller. In addition the melting point of gold is 1064degrees Celsius and the melting point of tungsten is much higher at 3410degrees Celsius. So pouring in the tungsten doesn’t seem possible to me, as it would deform the surrounding gold, which makes the pressed in rods method more likely IMO. Now, the picture above shows the gold is compressed where it was cut in half, where the tungsten looks shattered, which makes sense being that tungsten is far more brittle than gold. I would imagine if a gold bar were flexed/bent (only possible on smaller bars) you would either NOT be able to bend it or you would hear a cracking/snapping sound due if there were tungsten present.
I’m no metallurgist but there has to be a relatively simple way to verify. I’d say if you’re not sure when making a purchase, tell the seller that you want to cut one in half. If it’s pure all the way through you will buy it. If there is tungsten present you won’t. Good luck with convincing your bullion dealer 
I personally only buy silver coins and 10 Oz bars regardless of the slightly larger premium. When it comes to gold, I can only afford to buy it an ounce at a time anyway and the bars are always sealed and bar coded by the mint.

IMO if you are buying or taking delivery of anything larger and you don't check/verify, you're an idiot.

  19. Coins would be harder to fake due to the detail involved.

I would carry a digital scale, a magnet and a caliper if you're the suspicios type. Most mint facilities have strict size and weight limits. learn the sound a silver coin makes when you drop it.

  22. Darn, I guess I'd better visit my safe-deposit box on Monday, select a dozen of my 400-oz gold bars at random and saw them in half to see whether these are actually tungsten.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Scale, magnet, and caliper won't work. Tungsten passes the archimedes test (nearly exactly the same exact density as gold), and is not magnetic. I purchased a cheap tungsten ring and passed it over a neodymium magnet - no reaction.

GoldMoney has found that ultrasonic testers (non-destructive) do work though. Also, the metal is significantly harder, and much more brittle than gold, so it should not sound the same.

I believe that it might be difficult to make a coin with a tungsten core due to the brittleness and the way coins are pressed in a die (under such force, the tungsten might pop through the gold), but it's hard to say. (If anyone knows, please say something).

  27. Richard Mayberry does an excellent cover piece regarding this topic through a series of videos on his website. "Early Warning Report" I think is the name of his newsletter. He says, the smaller the coin or bar, the more difficult to counterfeit. He also shows you a product that consists of counter-weights and measuring devices all in one small carry case, that allows you to check the diameter, thickness, weight, etc. and they sell over the internet.

  32. Ok.
Here we go down the rabbit hole.
I read the story presented in the link.
The number $16 trillion keeps coming up in other stories.
There are some dots that seem to connect but I am not quite sure how to connect them.
We should start with the premise that this US government is as crooked as a dogs hind leg.

The Fed prints trillions in FRN and calls it real money.
Wall Street and the Banksters aid and abet this scam.
$15 trillion in Fed IOU's will never be paid back.
Trillions in counterfeit Fed notes printed in 1934 keep surfacing in Italy and Singapore, Japan and Dubai, all claiming to be real and all being used as an underground form of currency payment for drug and other 'illegal' commodities.
Here is where it get interesting.
If the story holds, someone manufacturered 16,000 tons of counterfeit gold. And it was put in Fort Knox
16,000 tons of real gold today would be worth about $960 billion. Not much, but a respectable total.
16,000 tons of gold was taken from vaults under World Trade Center building 7 before it was demo'd.
The Dragon Family has claim to several thousand tons of gold for the the treasury notes issued to them in trade for gold in 1934. They wanted safe haven. FDR wanted gold and traded T notes.
Where do these dots lead to and how do they connect?
    Any guesses?

  34. Sometimes, I wonder what has NOT been tainted by fraud when it comes to things of perceived value. It appears we are all at risk even trying to do normal daily business sad to say. I wonder if this could have implications of somehow at some point, this information will be used against physical buyers and declared of no value in some manner. Why not? If the feds try and pull a Roosevelt type of heist, they could easily do it under this kind of guise, knowing 'they' planted them. Just thinking out loud. I guess there is no limits to what these thieves can and will do when p;resented the opportunity.

Jim Willie talked about this fiasco over two years ago, and I always wondered if it was true...I guess he was on to something. Good advice from many of you also! Thank you. Yes, indeed verify verify verify any large delivery. Thank you for the article.

Not sure if I remember, but I think it has been like 40 years or so since Knox was audited? Maybe someone can help me on that time frame. Personally, as far as I understand it, Fort Knox has been empty for many years, the gold was moved, most is now supposed to be with the new york fed bank, but nothing to confirm this.

I do know, at least according to Sinclair, germany and a few other countries want their gold, and we are stalling in fulfilling their request. Not sure why it was moved here, other than some form of custodial management, but some Eu contries want their gold. If we do not deliver, maybe it is because we no longer have it...or it is all tungsten crap.

I have no idea, but I know things are not right and who knows what else is up the sleeves of the thieves. Hmmm...that would make a good song...maybe. You guys are a good bunch, I enjoy your thoughts and always learn something. :)

  48. I don't think this is anything to get too worried about. First, it isn't practical to counterfeit the coins, especially from the governmental mints. The amount of work it would take to counterfeit an American Eagle with the quality required would be huge.

And think about this... Not many people do it, but people do punch holes in their gold coins to make charm bracelets and necklaces for the mistress. I did that to a 1/2 oz. gold Eagle a couple years ago for Valentines day. (Yes... The action I got that night was more than worth it!!!)

If somebody found the hole they punched wasn't exactly what was expected they would be able to follow the trail of the coin back to the counterfeiter. Or, the USA Treasury and Secret Service would do it for them since the gold Eagles are US currency. To make a counterfeiting operation worth while, you wouldn't mess with governmental mint issues.

Setting that thinking aside... If this continues to get press and generate concern, it won't be long before every pawn shop is equipped with the ultrasonic detectors and maybe even X-Ray machines. If there is any size to the market, these devices could be made very cost effectively.

This problem will take care of itself over time. But I doubt there is much risk for Joe Public buying through established dealers right now.

    ReplyDelete
  49. With a basic machine shop it'd be pretty easy to drill out 5 holes, sized to fit 5 tungsten rods, heat the bar slightly, press in the cooled tungsten rods and let it all cool - a nice tight interference fit. If one did a lot of these I'm sure there'd be a jig that would hold the five rods and they all get pressed in at once. Plug up the holes with gold, do a little electron beam welding to cover your tracks and Bob's your uncle.

Ultra sonic testing would detect the problem and the bar would probably be stiffer than a real one. This could be detected by the note (higher pitched ring) if suspended and struck.

Pure gold has a specific gravity of 19.32, and tungsten has 19.22, but often it's less, as many tungsten items are fabricated by sintering due to it's high melting point, and can't quite make 19.22.

So, A little machine shop work and a $20k profit per bar - not bad!

  59. Doc, thanks for publishing this story. Whilst we all would like to draw links (myself included) to grand schemes of high finance I suspect the bar in question was the product of a criminal gang. They most likely bought a real bar with certificate, clamped it in a drill press, drilled out 5 holes and pushed in tungsten rods. The hardest part would have been convincingly resealing the drilled end with melted gold from the drill holes. Whilst I suspect this was not a once off it would certainly be rare. As most gold bought back by dealers (and all bought by scrap dealers) ends up getting re-refined or sold to manufacturing jewelers, if there was a large number of such bars we would be hearing about it on a regular basis as the bars were melted down.

My purpose was to forge the coin so I annealed and then hammered it. After a while it cracked and the inside was a bit darker and soft. I heated it again with the torch and the darker inside melted out at a very low temperature, much like pewter but not as low. It was a mess and I had several more advanced metalsmiths around for advice. Not one had ever seen or heard of such a thing and could not identify the darker metal inside the coin. I had to scrap the whole mess.

Whew, nice save, I almost gave away which family really runs the world. Oh... BTW, I'm not really suprised to see a mark from Switzerland as a "guarantee" as to the purity of this gold bar. Given to you by the same worhtless, dirty, backward, money grubbing, papist loving, mountain gnomes, that were o.k. taking gold from nazi-Germany during WWII. "Ya, Ve don't care if it came from vee mouths of dead Juden, as long as you wash the blood off of it first so it doesn't stain our hands." Switzerland: The dirty, little country that everyone HATED before there was an Isreal. I just can't wait to find out what the commie slopes are going to do when they find out they've been ROBBED!!! "NO MOLE SLAVE LABOL FOL YOU, LOUND-EYE!" [SIC]

    ReplyDelete
  79. this is not that big a deal.

it's an original metalor 1kg gold bar that was modified by drilling & filling with tungsten.

as long as you buy from a trusted source you won't have an issue.

a refiner like metalor isn't going to destroy their business just to make a quick buck, they would be quickly found out anyhow if they did that.

  81. Now wouldn't it be a lot easier to melt the gold, let it cool off a little, place the tungsten sticks, and top it off with the rest of the gold, let it cool off a little and add the logos and numbers and you're done. That would be a lot easier and more efficient -definitely, if done on a larger scale- than drilling, refilling and such.

More and more money being printed. Why? More and more bailout's of the elite. Why? More and more power to be obtained by the criminals.

The paradigm shift is very close now. The dollars days are truly numbered. Get as ready as you can. Don't wait any longer for when the shift comes it make life terrible even for those that have prepared.

  89. I agree with George Silver, this could be a not-very-subtle plot to discourage investment in physical gold. Tell me this wouldn't be a worry if you were thinking of converting your savings into gold bars.
The smaller bar being drilled, that is. The big 400 oz ones were to cheat someone (the Indians or Chinese?) on a bigger scale. Lies, fraud, theft, and counterfeit bullion. Sickening.

  90. In 1790 the law of the land was simple, basic and to the point. If officials of this country were found to be debasing our gold and silver currency they were subject to the death penalty.

If you counterfeit FRNs you get a long stay courtesy of Uncle Sam. In other countries you are executed.
I say let's get back to basics

If you are found guilty of counterfeiting gold and silver coins or bullion you are tried and if found guilty, you are executed. We need to stop pussy footing around.
I favor public executions. If found guilty, a person is taken to a public venue and hung or shot. It would be televised world wide. This should tend to discourage counterfeiting

If not, we will get some solid entertainment.
I am serious about this and an SOB when it comes to something as important as this. We have turned into a nation of pantywaists and wimps. What we need is some good old fashion country justice.

Hell, forget public executions for the maggots responsible for this gold thing - how about following in the foot steps of torture boy G.W. and have fun with a little public torture for a few weeks until they fess up to all there miss deeds. There's a reason for this and it's the same reason the whole "financial world" is a bunch of weasels. They manipulate all the markets for profits that funnel to them, not giving a "rat's ass" about the fate of the country or, for that matter, the world. What are these SOB's gonna do when the middle class can no longer afford to buy basic foodstuffs or gas to go to work. Destroy the middle class and, at the same time, they destroy their profits.

If we are ever able to recover from the blatant criminality that continues to this day by the "banksters", it will very likely require revolution from corporate capitalism and a new way of looking at our overall existence in this finite world of our very soon to be depleted unrenewable resources that the multinational energy corporations are currently creating wars to gather. It is unfortunate that money corrupts and blinds those in positions to do anything about the lies of the "filthy" rich.

  110. Just thinking of other ways to verify real gold of a given configuration. Tungsten is twice the electrical resistance of gold.
5.60 × 10-8 Ωm is the resistivity of tungsten and
2.44×10−8 Ωm is for gold. So I reckon a very sensitive ohm meter could do the job.Once the resistance of a real bar of gold of a given configuration is known, then it should be possible to do comparative analysis on other similar bars.

    ReplyDelete
  113. I like the resistance test.
Also isn't there something called specific gravity?

    ReplyDelete
  114. Tungsten is used because it has almost the same specific gravity and weight as Gold.

Resistance test is unreliable, since most of the current flows near the surface, and therefore mostly thru the Gold.

The best non-destructive test is acoustic, similar to a ultrasound sonogram.

If you have a Silver Eagle, for example, drop it on the table and listen to the unique ringing sound. A fake will not have that distinctive ringing sound.
